Rethinking Video Advertising on YouTube

Why aren't we discussing this? You know what I mean, right? Video ads on YouTube - they can be a real headache. Now, I get it; this isn't a topic everyone talks so openly about, and it's okay if you don't agree with me.

Even though I'm a marketer, I can't help but feel a annoyed when I'm trying to enjoy something on YouTube. And suddenly, an ad pops up out of nowhere.

I'm here for the content, and usually, the ad decides to appear right when things are getting interesting, where there is a hook. It's like it has a sixth sense for bad timing. It messes with my good vibes and puts a damper on my excitement. What's even worse is when the ad doesn't let me skip it. It sits there for 30 seconds looking me in my eyes saying "Deal with it".

Sorry, I would rather get a glass of water from the kitchen.

But it's not just the timing that bugs me. It's this feeling that the ad is intruding into my personal space, like I am on Big Brother / Big Boss set. Sure, I get that ads can be useful when they're relevant, like when they know I have a cold and need medicine. But sometimes, it feels like they're peeking into my private life.

My final thought is that, just because we put up with these ads doesn't mean we actually like them. Our only options seem to be paying premium price for an ad-free experience or installing an ad blocker. Maybe it's time to find a better way to balance ads and content, so we don't have to tolerate something we don't really enjoy.
